Background

The Health Star Rating system is a voluntary front-of-pack labelling scheme overseen by the Australian, state and territory and New Zealand governments. Implementation commenced in June 2014.

The system considers a selection of nutrients and components (energy, saturated fat, total sugars, sodium, fibre, protein and fruit, vegetable nut and legume content) to provide an overall summary of the nutritional profile of packaged food and beverages. The algorithm which underpins the Health Star Rating Calculator was developed by the former Front-of-Pack Labelling Technical Design Working Group in consultation with Food Standards Australia New Zealand and other technical and nutritional experts.
